News From The Art Room

Monarch: Gnome Houses with Crowley and Gray's 4th graders

We have been learning about clay and how to attach pieces together to make it 3D! Students tried the technique of scorring and slipping their edges together to create a wall and roof. They added beautiful designs by carving into the clay and then painted them once they were fired in the kiln!

Monarch: Owl Slabs with Ms Cockerill's 2nd graders

We have been learning about clay and how it is one of the oldest art forms in the world! We discussed how it is not only a functional piece, like a soup bowl, but it can be decorative as well. Students worked with a clay slab and turned it into an owl! Once it was fired in the kiln, students added crayon on top and then used the wax resist technique by painting black water color on top. Their colors REALLY popped!

Monarch: Blind Contour Project with Ms Page's 5th graders!

We have been learning about blind contour in class and practicing on each other! Students teamed up with a partner to take turns being the model and the artist. The artist has 4 minutes to draw their model... without looking! Our final project we used a sgraffito technique by adding a base layer with crayon to our paper and painting black on top. Once it was dry we carved out our image from the black paint and the crayon showed through!

Monarch: Clementine Hunter's Zinnias with Ross and Stephenson Kinders

We learned about Clementine Hunter for Black History Month and how she was a folk artist (self taught)! She created art from her favorite memories. We studied her Zinnia paintings and created our own! Students traced lids for the center of their flowers, then added petals and a vase. They turned out absolutely GORGEOUS! I wanted to keep them for myself :)

Simpsonville: K4 Caterpillars

Students read The Very Hungry Caterpillar and created their own! We talked about how the artist who made the caterpillar used blue, green, and yellow in the body. We painted our paper with those colors. Once it dried we traced lids, cut them out, and glued everything together! They also added their own details :)
