ESOL WIDA STANDARDS

ESOL WIDA Standards

The state of South Carolina has adopted the WIDA standards for ESOL students. These standards make it easy to align lessons with curriculum content and academic objectives from the students' regular education classrooms.


The WIDA English Language Development (ELD) Standards represent the social, instructional, and academic language that students need to engage with peers, educators, and the curriculum in schools.


Standard 1 recognizes the importance of social language in student interaction with peers and teachers in school and the language students encounter across instructional settings.


Standards 2-5 addresses the language of the content-driven classroom and of textbooks which typically is characterized by specific ways of communicating such as academic vocabulary, specific syntactic structures, and organizational patterns and conventions.


English Language Development Standard 1: Social and Instructional Language

ELL's (English Language Learners) communicate for Social and Instructional purposes within the school setting.


English Language Development Standard 2: The Language of Language Arts

ELL's communicate information, ideas, and concepts necessary for academic success in the content area of Language Arts.


English Language Development Standard 3: The Language of Mathematics

ELL's communicate information, ideas, and concepts necessary for academic success in the content area of Mathematics.


English Language Development Standard 4: The Language of Science

ELL's communicate information, ideas, and concepts necessary for academic success in the content area of Science.


English Language Development Standard 5: The Language of Social Studies

ELL's communicate information, ideas, and concepts necessary for academic success in the content area of Social Studies.
