Creating foundations for bright futures

Dear parents

It's been great celebrating World Book Week last week and the children had so much fun dressing up in their favourite book character, engaging in themed activities and hearing from authors.   It was lovely to see so many parents during the Come Learn With Me, engaging with our 'Love of Reading' theme.

We have some more events coming up such as Comic Relief and parent workshops.  Please scroll below for more details!

As you know we had an Ofsted inspection last week.  The inspectors said some wonderful things about the school and wanted me to pass on my thanks to the children who were absolutely 'delightful'.   The report will be published within 4 weeks, I will share this with you then.

Once again thank you all for your ongoing support.  With my very best wishes to you and your families.

Keeping Children Safe

Online Safety

With popular accounts belonging to comparatively wholesome celebrities such as Will Smith, The Rock, Billie Eilish and Selena Gomez, most of TikTok’s content is harmless – and can be extremely entertaining. The platform has already cemented its place among the social media giants.

But how does TikTok actually work? Why do so many people find it addictive? How easy is it to view age-inappropriate content?  And should children and young people even be on the platform at all?

Almost two thirds (63%, to be exact) of Snapchat users check the app at least once every day, while almost half (49%) log in more than once – with an average stay on the app of around 30 minutes. Such repetition hints at compulsive behaviour, but potential addiction isn’t the only online safety risk associated with the popular image- and video-sharing platform.

Snapchat has previously faced criticism over the many ‘beautifying’ filters and effects which have been linked to self-esteem and body-image issues – while the fact that messages can be set to automatically delete is seen in some quarters as facilitating peer on peer abuse.

Curriculum News

Acts of Kindness

As we are sure you are already aware, the children at Grange Park Primary School are encouraged to take part in volunteering through our Acts of Kindness (AOK) Programme.

We promote Acts of Kindness in the home, at school and in the community...

and through the work that we do with the numerous charities that we support.

Within the school, the programme allows children to take part in AOK’s at lunchtime which include litter picking, helping out in the dinner hall and reading hub, gardening, being a playground buddy and a buddy reader.

Children enjoy this responsibility and take it very seriously.

“I enjoy reading to the younger children and helping them to learn. It makes me feel happy and grateful that I am part of this school.”

Mila - Tiger class

“I enjoy mostly gardening because it reminds going to my grandpa’s with my cousin and watering the flowers.”

Elif - Ash class

"I  swept the floor in the dining hall, it made me feel good and kind!"

Franklin - Willow class

Acts of Kindness are celebrated every half term in special AOK assemblies where children receive special mentions for their contributions.

Recently the school purchased AOK bibs for all classes so it is obvious for anyone to see who is taking part in AOK!

We all know that there are many emotional benefits of both giving and receiving kindness, but did you know that being kind also has a ton of health benefits?

World Book Week

Last week we celebrated the 25th anniversary of World Book Day – with the message for all children ‘you are a reader‘! It was filled with lots of exciting, celebratory ways to promote reading for pleasure on World Book Day, and all-year round. The children (and some staff!) dressed up in their favourite book characters and enjoyed a whole school assembly, where they listened to some teachers read their favourite books.

Make sure you visit your local bookshop in order to exchange your book token for one of these brilliant books this year:

A Neptune child reading whilst doing a handstand....

Wondering what book to pick up next? Keen to try a new author? Looking for a book to inspire a reluctant reader?

This Tiger child is reading whilst waiting for her washing!

We’re here to help you discover your next read and to give children and families ideas of what books are suitable and brilliant for each age and stage of reading. Reading Recommendations

Wherever you are, you can enjoy a great book!

Pyjamarama!

The children enjoyed the chance to hear a story or two.

They dressed into their pyjamas and also enjoyed some hot chocolate and a biscuit at the end of the session.

Due to the popularity of the event we will be hosting another one for reception, Y1 & Y2 in the summer term!

Travelling Book Fair

The Travelling Book Fair is arriving on Monday 14 March! All children have a time allocated to their class to go and browse the Book Fair Bookcases. After their time at the fair, the children will have a ‘wish list’ where they can record 2 books that they would like to purchase.  The children will bring their wish lists home (paper copy). Please ask them for this on the day they have visited the fair.

Enrichment Clubs

Here at Grange Park Primary School we have an exciting array of clubs available and are continuously improving our offer.

This term we introduced Taekwondo, Albanian Language School, Rainbow Arts Club, Discovery Club and Gymnastics for Reception and KS1. The new additions have gone down a storm and the children are thoroughly enjoying taking part.

Here are some quotes from some of the participants:

Albanian Club

“I think this class is really fun. We play games at the end of the lesson and the teacher asks us to do something and then we translate it.” Kastina - Neptune class

"Albanian is interesting and it means we can learn to speak with our Grandparents." Natalia - Monet class

Discovery Club

“We love learning to code and creating ‘Spy Top Trumps'.” Eren - Kingfisher class

Watch out for our new club offer coming out next week. Following on from a recent pupil voice survey, we are looking at introducing even more clubs and have taken inspiration from what the children asked for including Gymnastics for KS2 on Thursdays and French Club on Tuesday.

Board Game Club

“I Love that this club is so interactive.” Eda - Saturn class

“We play with new and fun games every week.”  Seraphina - Cedar class

"I love that this club is so interactive." Angelo - Jaguar class

Spanish Arts and Craft Club

“We are making masks for a carnival that is happening in Spain right now.” Ediz - Puma class

Smart Raspberry Cooking Club

“I love cooking and tasting the food.”

“What I like is that we cook savoury one week and sweet the next.”

Forest School

Daffodil class have been spending their Friday afternoons in Grange Park's very own Forest School.

"Forest School has made me feel happy because we are outside and all together." Audrey - Daffodil class

Over the last few weeks the children have created their own clay tree monsters, discovered worms under logs, made nature paint brushes and mud paint and been surprised at how muddy their hands could get!

At the end of a session the children enjoyed sitting around base camp with a hot chocolate to warm up their muddy hands and share with one another what they have been up to.

A favourite memory from Daffodil class is when the children created their own shelter. They worked together to collect logs and sticks to hold one side of the shelter down. The children said it looks like a tent.

"I like looking for bugs. I have found lots of worms." Zac - Daffodil class

"I like collecting logs." Grace - Daffodil class

Comic Relief

On Friday 18 March, Grange Park Primary School will be supporting Comic Relief’s Red Nose Day Campaign. In order for us to ‘Have a laugh in class’, we are inviting pupils to make a suggested donation of £1 to dress up with a ‘touch of red’ on this day. This could be one of Comic Relief’s red noses, hair accessories or clothing which you can purchase or an item of red clothing that you already own such as socks, hair band and red shoes.

Donations can be a cash payment sent in with your child on the day or alternatively, you may wish to use our cashless donations page. Please use the link to access our donation page. You can select your choice of donation amount by clicking “Give Now,” deleting the default amount that is shown in the box and replacing it with whatever you would like to give.

Donating basic supplies

More than a million people have fled their homes in the Ukraine, so we are inviting our Grange Park Community to make cash donations to the UK’s Disaster Emergency Committee’s Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal and/or donate basic supplies to our collection on Monday 14 and Tuesday 15 March 2022 before and after school.  There will be a stall set up by the front gates for you to drop off any donations of basic supplies from the list below. We will then organise for the donations to be taken to the North London Collection Point.  From the collection point, vans run every 2-3 hours to Poland, where supplies are distributed across the border through pre-established corridors.

Click here for the letter that was sent out to parents on with some guidance to support you on how to talk to your child about what is happening.

Maths Parent Workshops

Thank you to those who were able to attend the KS1 Maths Parent Workshop this week. For those of you who were unable to make this, you can click here to view the slides on the school website.

See below for details of more Maths parent workshops which are taking place in the round hall that are coming up:

Charities - Age UK

One of the charities that Grange Park supports is Age UK. The children in Key Stage 1 and Early Years had an informative assembly explaining how this amazing charity supports the older generation.

Age UK is the country's leading charity dedicated to helping everyone make the most of later life. The charity provides services and support locally and nationally to inspire, enable and support older people.

“Too many older people feel they have no one to turn to for support. We exist to help older people when they need us the most.” Age UK

If you feel you would like to support this wonderful charity, you can make a donation in one of their shops.

Healthy snacks

All children are encouraged to bring in fruit and vegetable each day to have as a snack.  Children in reception, year 1 and year 2 are provided with a fruit or vegetable under the government scheme, they can of course bring in an additional snack (fruit or vegetable) if they wish.   If your child attends an enrichment club, your child can also bring in a fruit and vegetable to have after school.  Please ensure children only bring in a piece of fruit or vegetable, which has been washed beforehand (no biscuits, cereal bars, cheeses or crisps).

Birthday Books

Just a reminder that you are welcome to donate a book to the class rather than sending sweets on your child’s birthday.   The children across the school really enjoy reading these books.  Teachers also put a sticker in the book to show who it's from.   Thank you!

Year Group News

Nursery

Acorn class have been very busy exploring our topic ‘Things That Move’. We have been learning about the lifecycle of a butterfly.  The children have read the story of ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ by Eric Carle and enjoyed retelling the story for themselves using sequencing cards.

The children were very excited to receive some very special visitors which were delivered to the nursery. Our very own caterpillars to watch grow into beautiful butterflies.

For art we learnt about the artist Andy Warhol and his wonderful Butterfly Pop Art. The children made their very own Butterfly pop art prints. All the prints have been put together to make one big masterpiece.

We had great fun celebrating World Book Day in the nursery. The children enjoyed coming to school dressed as their favourite book characters. They even had a special visit from The Big Bad Wolf who read them the story of Mr Wolfs Pancakes. We even had a try at flipping our own pancakes.

Reception

Reception have quickly got stuck into our new topic “people around the world”. We most recently have been learning about the different continents around the world. They particularly enjoyed learning about Australasia and the indigenous culture. The children learnt about different types of instruments such as bull roarers, gum leaves and didgeridoos.  We even designed and created our own didgeridoos and used junk modelling materials to create our own musical instruments.

Our PSHE topic is Healthy Me! This week the children have been discussing ways to keep themselves healthy. We discovered there are 6 important ways to do this:

Our Artist for the half term is French artist Henri Matisse. He was well known for how he uses colour and shapes.  When he was young he used to do lots of paintings but as he grew older. He bag an to create collages. This is when different coloured shapes are cut out and glued on to create a picture.

This Bluebell child decorating the didgeridoo.

Decorating the class didgeridoo in Bluebell class.

This Snowdrop child drew a picture of himself and the ways he keeps healthy.

Here is a Tulip child who used various colours, materials and shapes to make his snail. He cut them out and stuck them on his paper to create his masterpiece. He was very proud of his creation!

Year 1

As part of our topic, ‘Wicked Weather’ Year 1 enjoyed a trip to Kew Gardens. We investigated the weather associated with the different seasons at Kew and its effects on plants.

“The green house was so hot, some leaves were huge.”  Zachary - Butterfly class

“My favourite part of the trip was the greenhouse because it was so warm and it had so many colourful, beautiful flowers in it.” Jasmine - Grasshopper class

“I loved looking at the tall trees with leaves bigger than me in the greenhouse.”

“We were on a plant hunt and I found Daffodils.”

“There were lots of flowers and we learnt about them.”

Year 2

Year 2 went on a field trip to explore how Christians belong to a Christian family or belief.

We spoke to a minister called Mandy, who is the leader of Enfield Baptist Church. She spoke to us about the actions of a Baptism...

Answering questions about their belief in Jesus, making promises, entering the pool on one side, having a “religious wash” and leading into your new life.

Then, we learnt about the key symbols of the baptist church.

Year 3

As well as all of their hard work in reading, writing and maths.  The pupils of Year 3 have been continuing to work hard in their foundation subjects.

PE

This term in PE the children have been developing their teamwork skills to solve problems.  Communication and thinking tactically are important skills to develop in all sporting games.  The children have had to work together to think of creative ways to complete the activities successfully.

D&T

This term we will be making pizzas inspired by the local area.  To do this we have explored the history of pizza before beginning to look at flavour combinations.  Obviously, the pupils enjoyed this session very much as they had to analyse and evaluate the different appearances, smells, textures and taste of different pizzas.

RE

In our RE sessions we are exploring the importance of values through religion and religious stories.  Pupils have explored what their values are along with the values of different religious communities.  In these sessions they have explored the story of ‘The Good Samaritan’, identifying the key teachings and values. The children could then make storyboards using our chromebooks and the ‘Storyboard that’ site to retell the story in our words.

Year 4

To kickstart our new history topic of Rampaging Romans, Year 4 enjoyed a trip to the Verulamium Museum and Roman Theatre in St Albans.

We were able to handle real artefacts as well as replicas of tools used by the Ancient Romans to give us a better understanding of what Roman Britain was like for those living in it.

We also saw restored mosaics and artefacts which had been uncovered through archaeological digs before seeing the remains of a Roman theatre.

Remains of a Roman theatre.

“It felt like I was a Roman looking at my past life.” Nino - Leopard class

“The trip was awesome! I loved all of the exhibits and learned lots of new things, for example how Boudica almost ruined the Roman reign as it took 20 years to recover from her rebellion.”  Olivia - Leopard Class

Year 5

Drawings by Maisie and Millie - Saturn class

Year 5 has had a great start to the half-term. We have started a unit on Rivers and  have been learning a lot about them in the last few weeks: reading poetry about rivers, investigating the different features of a river throughout it's upper, middle and lower courses as well as looking at maps of the River Thames.

Drawings from bottom left: Nael, Christine, Eda, Khadidja, Maisie, Guney - Saturn class

We have even been doing orienteering in PE. We are really looking forward to diving deeper into this topic.

In Art, we have completed our monarch portraits of King Henry VII ... and they are royally good!

Year 6

Our learning quest topic this half term is called  ‘Mountains: Friend or Foe?’. We looked into Mount Everest, as it is the highest peak in the world. The children had to research many aspects of the history and geography of this incredible natural wonder. The children then created their own thing.link to present their findings.

From there, we brought it closer to home, looking at an ordnance survey map of Mount Snowdon. The children had to use 6 grid reference to find different features, using the key to figure out what would be at each location.
