Reading Recovery

What is Reading Recovery?

Reading Recovery is a highly effective short-term intervention of one-on-one tutoring. In Reading Recovery, students receive a half-hour lesson each school day for 12 to 20 weeks in addition to their regular classroom reading instruction. As soon as students can read within the average range of their class, their lessons are discontinued, and new students begin individual instruction.

How can parents help at home?

A homework reading folder is sent home with your child every day. Please sit and listen to your child read his or her book(s) and sign the log each day. Many times there will also be an envelope in the folder. The story your child wrote in that day's lesson has been written on a sentence strip and cut into pieces. Please watch your child put the cut up pieces back in the correct order. After the sentence is put back together, ask your child to read it to you again. The sentence is then glued into the notebook that is provided in the homework folder. Your child may opt to draw an illustration to match the words.
