Fluency Activities

Remind your child to...

- read it like you talk

- attend to punctuation

- use expression

Echo Reading: You read a line of text and then the child reads the same line of text after you. Remind the child to match the print with his/her eyes and listen to pauses and expression.

Choral Reading: You and your child read the same text aloud together. Read the same text several times. Remind the child to match the print with his/her eyes and to match your rate and phrasing.

Partner Reading: You and your child take turns reading. This can be done by alternating lines or pages.

Recorded Reading: Tape record your child reading a text and have them listen to it noting their phrasing and fluency. How does it sound? What can they do to make the reading sound better?

Timed Reading: Time your child reading for one minute and mark how far in the text they are at the end of the one minute. Read the text to your child while they follow along matching the print and listening to the phrasing and expression. Do this two times and then read it again while they listen with their eyes closed. Finally, have your child reread the text and once more mark how far they have read in one minute.
