In fifth grade, we study early American history until the creation and approval of the Constitution. There is also a vocabulary component to Social Studies class. Here are our units for the year:

Please note that some of the content students will be learning about and discussing can be more intense than in past grades. We will be learning about conquest, cultural conflicts, war and slavery. In the spring, we often show clips of dramatized re-enactments of the conflict and battles fought during the American Revolution. If you have concerns about your child viewing video clips such as these, please let us know.

We do not have a physical copy of our textbook for the year. We use the online text from the Michigan Open Book Project. A link to download the 5th Grade Textbook is here. We also use various Kids Discover articles through kidsdiscover.com to supplement our online text.
