March 2024
SLIM received the official notification from the Committee of Accreditation of the American Library Association that they have voted to grant continued accreditation status to our Master of Library Science program. SLIM’s next comprehensive review is scheduled for Fall 2030. This is a great accomplishment for SLIM, and thank you all so much for your participation during the accreditation processes and your great support through the past 8 years!
In January, SLIM students enrolled in LI 863 XI gathered to attend LIB LEARN X in Baltimore!
December 2023
On November 3rd, the Beta Phi Mu new member induction ceremony was held during the annual meeting of the Emporia State University Beta Epsilon Chapter at the 2023 Kansas Library Association Conference in Wichita, KS. Congratulations, new members!
Drs. Amanda Hovious, Mirah Dow, and Andrew Smith (pictured left to right), members of the Emporia State University (ESU), School of Library and Information Science faculty, were invited presenters during the ESU Beta Epsilon Chapter of Beta Phi Mu annual program held at the 2023 Kansas Library Association conference, Wichita, KS. The program was titled "Censorship as Information Behavior."

Robert McCloskey: The Art of Wonder celebrates life in Maine, children’s literature, illustrations as art and the 140th anniversary of the Curtis Memorial Library in Brunswick, Maine (curtislibrary.com/). The exhibit features more than 70 pieces of McCloskey’s original illustrations from ESU’s May Massee Collection, from Caldecott award-winning books "Make Way for Ducklings" and "Time of Wonder," Caldecott honor books "Blueberries for Sal" and "One Morning in Maine" and "Burt Dow: Deep-Water Man."
Thank you to all the participants of the 2023 Summer Institute! Dr. Kristen Mattson taught attending school librarians about teaching digital citizenship, digital ethics, and critical thinking to their students.

It was so great to watch our SLIM students transition to alumni in December 2022! Congratulations! We wish you the best of luck on your future endeavors. Go Hornets!
In January, SLIM students attended the LibLearnX (ALA midwinter) conference in New Orleans, Louisiana! Presenters discussed the increase in book bans and censorship; the value of centering the narratives of those who are Black, Indigenous, and people of color; and how libraries anticipate community needs and practice sustainability.
December 2022
Daria Bossman (SLIM ‘91), an ESU Distinguished Alumni Award recipient in 2020, was recognized in person at ESU Homecoming Black & Gold Gala on Friday, October 28. The badge along with the award trophy is 31 years old and it is one of those given to Daria’s cohort for their graduation. Daria’s cohort is the first of SLIM’s distance education cohorts, which started in 1988 in Sioux City, Iowa. Congratulations again, Daria!
On November 18th, SLIM’s Graduate Assistants Congwen Wang and Nazmunnahar Jaly represented their cultures at the Office of International Students’ International Culture Show. Their performances were fun to watch and demonstrated the beauty of their cultures.

FIRST IN THE WEST: A History of the Emporia State University School of Library and Information Management
The first comprehensive history of the ESU School of Library and Information Management (SLIM) traces the library education program from its origin in 1902 as the first library school west of the Mississippi River.
Authored by former dean Robert Grover with Dean Wooseob Jeong, this recently published history provides insights from former faculty and students as the school evolved to a multi-state master’s degree program, offering a doctorate and numerous certificate programs in library and information science.
This history traces the struggles of the library program as it moved from undergraduate to graduate level, achieved accreditation and lost it—most recently in 1982—and regained American Library Association accreditation as the program expanded to its current state.
The book is available for purchase in paper or e-book format through Emporia State University’s Bluestem Press. Proceeds from sales of the book will be directed to the School of Library and Information Management.

It was great to watch our SLIM students transition to ALUMNI! Congratulations, Hornets! We wish you the best of luck on your future endeavors.
On May 3rd, SLIM partnered with the Emporia Public Library to host a showing of Star Wars: The Force Awakens in celebration of Star Wars Day. Attendees also enjoyed dressing up, taking photos with the local 501st Legion costumers, and interacting with a remote controlled (and 3D printed) BB-8!
On March 9, 2022, the ESU Student Chapter of the American Library Association (SCALA) hosted a panel of current SLIM Ph.D. students who are at various stages of the program to share and answer questions about their PhD student experience and future career goals.
