TIPS

  • You can have some discounts for the majority of restaurants in France if you book in advance on "The Fork" website.

  • In France, service is always included in the price, so you only leave a tip when you are extremely satisfied with the service (about 5 to 10% of the total amount).

  • One of the tradition in France is going to the market. It is an excellent alternative to supermarket for those seeking to eat well without going broke and for obtaining advice from the sellers.

  • The apéritif, familiarly called the apéro, is a real institution in France. It is a relaxed time spent with the family or friends before dinner. It is the time to have a drink while nibbling on something tasty. It is a very pleasant French tradition. You'll see; you'll soon develop a taste for it.

  • You said cheese? The French people love it and it is not a cliché. There is a huge range of choice with more than 350 types of cheese: firm and soft cheese, mild or blue, cow milk's cheese, goat's milk or sheep's milk cheese. You will easily find one or two on your taste, before you become completely addicted.

  • There is another moment of the day that the lovers of good pastries will appreciate: the goûter. It is a typical four o'clock all kids enjoy after school. But it is not restricted to kids! It is an amazing time when you are socially encouraged to grab something sweet. The best is to go to the nearest boulangerie and have a cup of coffee or tea with a wonder tarte au citron, a mousse au chocolat or any other dessert - gâteau. Some of the most famous pastries in Paris are: Patisserie Pain de sucre, Pierre Hermé, Yann Couvreur, Carl Marletti, Arnaud Larher, Jean-Paul Hévin, Stohrer, Ladurée, L'éclair de Génie, Sadaharu Aoki, Laurent Duchêne, Kevin Lacote, etc.

  • AOC (L’appellation d’origine contrôlée - Protected designation of origin) – a special food certification system being around since 1411. It regulates the boundaries where certain goods can be produced and assures the quality of regional foods. The best example is that no sparkling wine can be called Champagne unless it comes from the same named province. The French take pride for guaranteeing that all AOC sealed products will hold to a harsh set of strictly outlined standards. All the goods will be produced in a traditional manner with only those ingredients that come from specific producers in designated geographical areas.
