Math and Science

This Week in Math and Science...

February 2021 Wrap-Up

In Math, we focused on Improper Fractions and Mixed Numbers. We took a look at how to identify them, and comparing them using number lines and equivalent fractions

In Science, we completed Sky Science Unit. Students created a project on the Planet Presentation, and finished off their presentations on the planets they researched. We started our new unit on Air and Aerodynamics. Students completed a series of experiments to identify the different properties of air.

January 2021 Wrap-Up

In Math, we completed our transformations unit. We looked at how translations, rotations, and reflections were completed on the coordinate grid.

In Science, students took the month to research a planet of their choice, and make comparisons to Earth. Students also investigated how the Sun the Earth's seasons, and the Moon's phases.

Math - Week of October 13

This week, we reviewed our work from Input/Output Tables. This week, we learned how to find patterns in diagrams and using the information from input/output tables to continue a pattern.

Math Groups:

On Wednesday, in Math groups, we reviewed multiplying two and three digit numbers by 1 digit numbers. As well, we also focused on writing numbers.

Science - Week of October 13

This week we looked at the differences between coniferous and deciduous trees. We watched a video and discussed characteristics we noticed about coniferous and deciduous trees. Students were also given an independent assignment to identify leaves based on the type, the shape and the margins (edges) of a leaf or arrangement of needles.

Math - Week of October 5

Lately we have been doing review of math operations. This week we focused on Subtraction. On Monday, we reviewed Subtraction and reviewed the expectations of word problems. Wednesday was the start of our Patterns unit. Students looked at Input/Output tables and how to determine pattern rules from a table. A page from the Math Makes Sense Grade 6 textbook is shown here.

Math Groups:

Each student is grouped in a math group with their peers who have similar math abilities. After completing the MIPI, a math assessment that looks at students' math abilities, I noticed students need some practice in basic math skills. These groups are meant to target and offer a space for students to ask questions in smaller settings.

In each Math group, we are focusing on basic math skills from last year such as place value, and expanded form (ie. 8672 = 8000 + 600 + 70 + 2). This is so students receive a refresher and have room to practice these skills before moving onto new Math material.

Science - Week of October 5

As a class we discussed the importance of trees from the sketch notes they created last week. Students had some great ideas to share. They started to explore Parts of a Tree independently, which we will go in depth with further into the unit. Yesterday, students were also given an assignment to sketch trees in their neighbourhood over the long weekend. Their assignment is posted in Google Classroom. This activity will be a leeway into a different topic.
