Grade 8 Course Outline

Big Ideas:

What shapes the worldview of a society?

How does worldview change over time?

What happens when different cultures meet and interact?


Key units:

  1. JAPAN (~Sept - Jan)

  • History of Japan including the period of isolation, its eventual contact with the West and ending with the Meiji restoration

Goal: Understand what shapes Japanese worldview and how it leads to isolation and adaptation


  1. RENAISSANCE EUROPE (~Jan - April)

    • A look at the shift in thinking from the Medieval period to the Renaissance and the reasons for this change

Goal: Understand how exchange of ideas between groups and cultures helped shape western worldview


  1. AZTEC and the SPANISH (~April - June)

    • A look at the Aztec culture and history pre and post contact with the Spanish including a brief history of Spain

Goal: Understand how contact between societies can impact each groups worldview


Materials:


  • Textbooks (kept in the classroom, digital copy on google classroom)

  • Binder to keep all notes

  • Pencils, pens, erasers

  • Pencil Crayons / markers
