Teaching Students to be Global Citizenships- May 2022, my 4th graders will learn about the complex lives of migrant farmworkers in California. In particular, they will explore the plights and challenges that many child farmworkers face as they struggle to stay in school. *This is an assignment that I created as a Lasallian Fellow at St. Mary's College. These Google Slides include links to videos, songs, and art. Could be assigned via Google Classroom as an individual assignment or shared as a collaborative assignment; some activities could be teacher-led, and others in station-rotations.

Specific Learning Objectives:

  • Students will learn about the life of migrant farmworkers. Students will learn about the crop cycle in California, and how migrant farmworkers move from place-to-place in search of work/home; they follow the crop cycle. Students will analyze the grim living conditions experienced by child migrant farmworkers.

  • By the end of the lesson, students will be able to describe and provide details about the harsh conditions of life faced by migrant farm working families and their children.
