Curriculum

Here is an overview of the second grade curriculum:

Reading

Our Reading program is called Journeys. Students participate in both whole group and small group instruction. Students engage in reading comprehension, vocabulary, phonics, spelling, and grammar lessons on a daily basis.

Assessments include skills your child has learned throughout each five day lesson. The lesson assessments are given on day five of the lesson. Benchmark assessments include skills learned in each unit, and are given every five lessons.

Writing

In writing, we will use a Writer's Workshop model. We begin writing each day with a mini lesson where our writing focus is introduced by the use of mentor texts. Then, your child will be writing for 15-20 minutes daily about a topic of their choice. You will be amazed how much their writing will progress throughout the school year! You may not see a lot of writing coming home, because we keep our pieces of writing in our writing folders as we are constantly revising and editing our work. We will learn about narrative writing, how-to writing, descriptive writing, opinion writing, and informative writing.

Math

In math, our students will do their learning in guided math groups that teach topics based on the Nebraska State Standards. This type of lesson format allows the teacher to meet the needs of learners of all levels in the classroom.

Topics we will cover this year include:

  • Number Sense
  • Single and Double Digit Addition and Subtraction
  • Early Multiplication and Division Concepts
  • Measurement
  • Fractions
  • Money
  • Time
  • Geometry Skills
  • Data and Graphing

Science

Social Studies

In social studies, we will be doing several hands-on activities that cover the Nebraska State Standards.
