FAQs
What if my student wants to change their schedule?
According to the South Carolina Uniform Grading Policy, students can make course changes within the first 5 days of a semester class and within the first 10 days of a yearlong class and should talk to their School Counselor via email or in person to request a change. Teacher preference requests will not be granted. All changes cannot always be made and are subject to availability. Students should keep this in mind when making course requests since we cannot always accommodate change requests. Parent approval is required for schedule changes.
Students can move from a CP level course to an Honors level course within the first 10 days of a semester course and the first 20 days of a yearlong course. Level changes from Honors to CP can be made within the first 4.5 weeks of a semester course and the first 9 weeks of a yearlong course. Students take their grade to the new class with them.
All schedule changes or level changes are dependent on space availability in the other course and cannot be guaranteed.
What if my student wants to change their School Counselor?
School Counselor caseloads are carefully determined each year to ensure an equal workload for every School Counselor and changing School Counselors is not possible. If you have a concern regarding your School Counselor, please reach out to the Director of School Counseling for additional support.
What if my student wants to retake a course?
Students are only required to repeat a course required for graduate that they earn a 59 or lower in. According to the South Carolina Uniform grading policy, students may elect to retake a class in which they earn a 69 or below. In these circumstances, the higher of the two grades will count in the students GPA but all course attempts will always show on the students transcript. Classes must be retaken by the end of the next calendar year or before the next sequential class has been taken.
Students moving from 8th grade to 9th grade may retake any high school credit course and the higher grade will count in their GPA but both attempts will show on the transcript. The class must be retaken prior to the end of the next year of high school.
What if my student wants a late in or early out?
Seniors have the privilege of a late in or early out if their graduation plan allows. Students in grades 9-11 are not eligible for a late in or early out due to the need for a full course schedule. Any late in or early out requests for students in grades 9-11 may be decided on an individual basis by the Principal as needed for medical or other needs. Any student with a late in or early out is required to return late in/early out form signed by a parent or guardian.
What if I want to meet with my student's teacher or teachers?
Parents with concerns that require the input and advice of more than one faculty or staff member may contact their School Counselor to request a conference. Conference times where the entire team is available are limited to before or after school and can be conducted in person or over Zoom. Individual parent and teacher conferences should be coordinated between the parent and teacher. If the issue involves an academic problem or a class, the parent should contact the teacher(s) first to resolve the issue, before contacting Administration or School Counselors.
