What is WBL?

WHAT IS THE WORK-BASED LEARNING PROGRAM (WBL)?

Work-Based Learning (WBL) placements represent the pinnacle of the Career-Related Education experience. To qualify for a WBL placement, a student must at least 16 years old. Students should have a defined Career Pathway in order to participate in the WBL Program. Placements should be related to a Pathway of Study that the student has completed or is concurrently enrolled.

WHAT STUDENT SHOULD CONSIDER WBL?

The minimum time for a WBL placement is the number of hours which would have been spent in the typical classroom.  However, in many placements you will spend more than the minimum required time.   Many placements will have the students on-site past the normal ending of the school day.  The WBL student is willing to go above and beyond the minimum level of performance.  Remember, WBL is for students who want an additional learning experience in a potential career field, not for someone trying to do as little as possible.  Each placement is unique in expectations and requirements.  The placement is tailored for the employer and student.

WHAT IS EXPECTED IN WBL?

Students will be grouped in an online class and have various activities throughout the school year.  Many of these activities will lead to a portfolio which will be submitted at the end of the school year.  Students will be reporting hours monthly.  The grade will be determined as a combination of reporting, Schoology activities, and employer evaluations.

WHAT KIND OF JOB DO I NEED?

Not all student jobs are acceptable to the WBL program.  The job should be based upon a pathway of career interest.  WBL students must also have on-site supervision.  Jobs such as babysitting children or cutting grass, for example, are great jobs, but will not meet the requirements of the WBL program if there is not a direct supervisor with the student.  If paid, students must be working in jobs in which taxes are withheld or a Federal Form 1099 is issued. Mrs. Austin will assist students with placements.

HOW DO I GET INTO WBL?

Completing an application is the first step of the application process.  Students will be evaluated on factors such as school attendance, discipline referrals, and teacher recommendations.  Applying does not guarantee acceptance. After completing application, students must print Parent/Guardian Notification Form.  This form is acknowledgement that your parent/guardian is aware that you are applying for WBL.  This form should be either turned in directly or scanned and emailed to Mrs. Austin. Your application will not be considered until you return this form. Please contact Mrs. Austin for more information, kasey.austin@carrolltoncityschools.net.
