The Why: Innovation

Guiding Question: How might we redesign schools and our organization to resource student success in this rapidly changing world?

Technology is driving fundamental changes in how humans relate, learn, work, and play. New types of work are being created while others are fading away.

Drivers of change, AR/VR, Blockchain, the $1000 Human Brain, among others are transforming our realities right now. The World Economic Forum estimates that 65% of children entering kindergarten today will work jobs that currently do not exist.

Equitable Innovation

Guiding Question: How might we redesign learning, schools, and our organization to enable equitable access to innovation?

Boston Public Schools, understanding the dynamic changing world we live in, has defined innovation as one of our three core values. We define innovation not as a thing, but as a process. Innovation is building a culture of change that generates new solutions at every level of BPS from classrooms to schools to the central office. Join us on our innovation journey.

The Innovation Opportunity Gap Defined

Like most cities with thriving economies, Greater Boston is creating the future. However, the Innovation Economy is NOT equitable, in Boston and beyond. Unfortunately, many of our educators, students, and community members do not have access to the very opportunities shaping our future. Many live, work , play, and learn in what are called Innovation deserts.

This map shows plots of Boston’s startup scene (over the last 5 years) with over $37 billion in funding raised. When the overall child opportunity index is overlaid, notice the innovation deserts that emerge in the tan areas. The majority of BPS students live in these deserts.
