About Mr. Altorfer

Hello, this is Paul Altorfer and I teach the 7th grade AVID Elective here at Fairmont Jr. High. This is my 31st year of teaching and my 24th year at Fairmont. I was born and raised in Klamath Falls, Oregon and attended Henley High school. I graduated from Oregon State University with a degree in Elementary Education in 1988, and earned my Master’s degree from Boise State University in 2005. Along with teaching AVID at Fairmont, I coach freshman football at Capital High School.

I have been married to my lovely wife Lisa for 34 years. We have three outgoing daughters, two sons-in-law and two dogs, Ernest and Norman. We love to travel and have fun with our family.

I am proud to say that Fairmont has had the AVID program for 14 years and we are an AVID National Demonstration School. AVID, Advancement Via Individual Determination, is an elementary through post-secondary college readiness system that is designed to increase school-wide learning and performance. The AVID system accelerates student learning, uses research based methods of effective instruction, provides meaningful and motivational professional development, and acts as a catalyst for systemic reform and change. We want our students to graduate from college.

AVID’s mission is to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society.
