Aims, British Values and Ethos

About Our Academy

Feversham Primary Academy opened in November 2012 as part of the Academies Enterprise Trust. Working closely with the AET, we are committed to giving all our pupils the best chances for success in life.

Aims and Vision

We aim to provide the opportunity for all learners to fulfil their real potential, broaden their horizons and become active, prosperous and successful citizens in the world around them. We believe that all pupils deserve to become world class learners - to learn, enjoy, succeed and thrive in a first rate educational environment, with the best facilities, the best teaching and the most up to date resources available to them. We are committed to doing everything we can to ensure that young people are able to, in the future, compete on the world stage with the skills, confidence and flair to generate new ideas, new initiatives and thereby make a full contribution to tomorrow's world.

We will achieve this by:

Being an inclusive academy which provides equality of opportunity for all learners, with high quality teaching and learning to meet individual needs, and promoting a culture of high expectations.

Providing well for learners’ care, health and safety and to meet their physical, mental, social, spiritual, moral and cultural needs.

Ensuring a rich, broad, balanced curriculum presented in an interesting, exciting and imaginative manner, with practical work, investigation and learning through play.

Integrating creative activities such as art, music, dance, drama, poetry and to enrich the curriculum by visits, visitors and use of the environment.

Incorporating basic skills and ICT across the curriculum making links between subjects and encouraging learners to develop their self-confidence by contributing to the community.

Involving families and the wider community in the children’s learning and in the life of the school, including partner schools in BD34ALL and local organisations and businesses.

Aspiration

Every pupil at the Academy is encouraged, and supported, to set their sights high and broaden their ambitions, irrespective of their background or their individual circumstances. Our curriculum and enhancements aim to foster this process through a diverse range of events, visits, visitors and use of the local environment.

British Values

The DfE have recently reinforced the need “to create and enforce a clear and rigorous expectation on all schools to promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.”

The Government set out its definition of British values in the 2011 Prevent Strategy. These values are reinforced regularly at Feversham primary Academy in the following ways:

Democracy

At the start of each academic year, pupils vote for their school council class representative. Potential candidates deliver a presentation to their class and an election is held where pupils enter their vote into a ballot box.  Head Boys and Head girls for each house are elected in a similar process.

Our school council meet fortnightly to discuss issues raised by individuals and classes and influence change within the school.

The Rule of Law

Feversham Primary Academy constantly reinforces The importance of laws, whether they are those that govern the class, the school, or the country.  At Feversham Primary Academy we:

● value and respect each other

● create an environment which facilitates exceptional work at all times

● are equipped with a range of strategies to support us in solving our own problems

● respect the school’s equipment, environment and each other’s property

● actively challenge acts of discrimination based on protected characteristics.

Pupils are also taught the importance of our four values:

● be unusually brave

● discover what's possible

● push the limits

● be big hearted

Pupils are expected to follow the school and class rules at all times. Through the curriculum and weekly assemblies, children are taught the value and reasons behind rules and laws, how they govern and protect us, the responsibilities that these involve and the consequences when rules are broken. Scheduled visits from authorities such as the police and fire service help reinforce this message.

Individual Liberty

We encourage pupils to express and listen to each other’s views through our curriculum; for example, through PSHE discussions, debates in English and topic lessons and the use of talk partners.

At Feversham primary Academy,  pupils are actively encouraged to make choices, knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment.

We educate and provide boundaries for pupils to make informed choices and teach children how to make the right choice, for example through PSHE discussions and weekly assemblies.

We have a strong anti-bullying culture and our pupils understand the importance of being a helpful bystander.

Mutual Respect

Children learn that their behaviours have an effect on their own rights and those of others. The school community  is encouraged to treat each other with respect.

Feversham Primary Academy promotes diversity, tolerance and understanding, through our celebration of different faiths and cultures. we reinforce messages of tolerance and respect through the teaching of Religious Education and PSHE. Whole school assemblies include stories and celebrations from a variety of faiths and cultures.

We always challenge prejudicial and discriminatory behaviour on an individual, class or whole school level. Children are given the opportunity to discuss the differences between people, such as faith, ethnicity, disability, gender, family differences or sexuality.

Tolerance Of Those With Different Faiths And Beliefs

Our school is not as diverse a school as in some areas in the UK. However, we enhances pupils understanding of different faiths and beliefs through religious education studies; assemblies for special occasions for a variety of faiths; and visits to places of worship for various faiths. Beliefs, traditions and customs will be studied in depth, with visitors being invited in to our school to enrich and extend understanding. Through this our pupils gain an enhanced understanding of their place in a culturally diverse society.
