Katie Sierra and the First Amendment Assessment - due Tuesday 12/18 (green, blue, purple, black); Wednesday 12/19 (orange)

In the last several days, students have participated in the “Town Meeting Simulation” in which they each play a role to discuss possible limits on Freedom of Speech and Freedom of Assembly. The simulation is a made up scenario based upon real events in Sissonville, West Virginia in the fall of 2001. While role-playing, students try to determine what the appropriate balance is between personal freedom and group safety in a school.

In this assessment, students demonstrate their understanding of the multiple perspectives they heard from during the "Town Meeting Simulation." Also, students use evidence gathered to support two possible answers to the two questions posed in our simulation. The two questions are: 1. Should Katie Sierra be allowed to wear her t-shirts in school? 2. Should Katie Sierra be allowed to start her club in school? The criteria for success for this assessment is attached below.
