RESEARCH

Main research topics

The scientific activity is documented in about 80 papers published in the scientific national or international literature. Research interests, although they cover many aspects of transport system engineering, are mainly addressed to the study of advanced methods for transport system modelling and management (usually denoted as “Intelligent Transportation Systems”) and specifically focused on traveller information systems, road traffic control and network design of dynamic logistic systems.

The methodological approach was always founded on a preliminary study of the mathematical properties of the problems. This usually allowed the development of simple analytical models, useful to interpret physical phenomena and to individuate requirements and performances of the system under study. After these first results had been achieved, then the research was addressed to the system development, hopefully with the cooperation of third bodies interested in the implementation aspects. Opportunities for improving performances are then investigated, both by applying advanced numerical methods and by integrating the different components of the system, formerly studied singularly. Basic research activities carried out at the University have been completed thanks to stimulating experiences in research and development as an evaluator of important national research projects, almost concerning traveller information systems and advanced management transport systems.
