Photos of my sour dough bread making experience
- I made a sour dough starter using wild yeast. I did not add any baker's yeast.
- I just placed flour and water in a bowl and let them sit on the counter. An ecosystem developed in the bowl.
- Each day, I "fed" the starter with more flour and water and kept it warm with a heating pad.
- Fermentation occurred due to yeast and bacteria that just grew on their own in the dough. It was an ecosystem of multiple species thriving in the dough. Really cool!!
- It should have been ready to bake by day 5, but mine was lagging.
- I made a loaf of sour dough bread on day 7. It smelled so good fresh from the oven. I followed the recipe in the link above.
- It was pretty cool to make a loaf of bread from scratch without adding any yeast or other leavening agent like baking soda....just like the Egyptians thousands of years ago.
