Community: Mendocino High School (MHS) is located on a hill overlooking the Pacific Ocean and the historic rural coastal village of Mendocino, approximately 150 miles north of San Francisco, CA. The major occupations of the area include tourism, service businesses, state parks, telecommunications, health care and education. Many artists, writers and musicians also call Mendocino home.



MUSD: Includes two small rural K-3 schools plus one main K-8 campus, one high school, a continuation school and a K-12 alternative independent study/home school program.



Schools: Mendocino High School (MHS) is a comprehensive four-year WASC accredited public high school with complete offerings of college preparatory courses in all core academic subject areas. MHS has been the recipient of a California Specialized Secondary School grant in the area of environmental studies for the SONAR program (School of Natural Resources). MHS has also been recognized as an Exemplary Dual-Enrollment Award recipient through our partnership with Mendocino College.

Mendocino Community High School is a college preparatory alternative school within MHS. Students take courses at MCHS as well as MHS, and MCHS requires a Senior Project for graduation. This project is an in-depth exploration (150-200 hours) that culminates with a community presentation in May.



Mendocino Alternative School – Independent Study (MAS), Mendocino Sunrise High School (MSHS) and Career Technical Education pathways: MAS and MSHS are offered adjacent to MHS/MCHS and are fully accredited 9 – 12 programs that provide alternatives to the more traditional program, especially for students who need reduced days or flexible scheduling.



Career Technical Education (CTE) pathways are offered in the Plant and Soil Sciences, Digital, Visual and Media Arts, Production and Managerial Arts, Foodservice and Hospitality and Engineering and Technology.

Sustainability: MHS has adopted a school wide learning theme of Sustainability. A number of programs are offered to promote the organic evolution of ideas, connections and collaborations between students, staff and community to support this theme.



Advanced Level Courses: Honors level course options are offered in college preparatory English, History/ Social Science and Spanish ¾, and Desktop Publishing, totaling 8 in grades 10-12. MHS offers the following AP courses: English Literature/Composition, Calculus and AP Environmental Science. The number of AP courses a student can take in a given year depends on course conflicts within the Master Schedule, not exceeding 2.


Dual-Enrollment: 4 tracks are offered in partnership with Mendocino College: Science, Math, Woods & General Electives.



Class Rank: MHS does not rank its students individually but uses percentiles.

Graduation Requirements:

MHS/MCHS provide students with a strong college academic and elective program to prepare them for college and future careers. To earn a diploma from MHS/MCHS, students must complete a minimum of 265 credits in either the MHS or MCHS graduation track in the following areas:

Faculty: The faculty includes 16 teachers and 4 Instructional Aides.


Alternative Education Week: During one week each spring, all students participate in experiential learning.

Trips and courses include: Yosemite Institute, College & Career Tours, Filmmaking, Rock Climbing, Backpacking, Culinary Arts, SF Bay Sailing, Mendocino Art Center, Driver’s Training, Mountain Biking, among others. Activities are dependent on adherence to public health guidelines.



Athletics: MHS is a member of the California Interscholastic Federation. MHS fields teams in the following sports: Soccer (co-ed), Volleyball, Basketball (g/b), Track, Cross Country, Tennis, Golf and Baseball.

Designations: AP – Advanced Placement

Grades: A=4 points, B=3 points, C=2 points, D=1 point, F=0 point

I = Incomplete, CR/NC (Credit/No Credit: dropped classes/did not earn credit) and P (Pass: these courses do

not have a grade option)

Scholastic Aptitude Test:

Due to the Covid pandemic and the decreased demand for college aptitude tests, our percentage of students in the last two years opting to take the SAT test has dropped from the mid 60% range to the low 30% range. We feel that this is not relevant data to include in our school profile.
