Day 6 Leadville to Clear Creek Reservoir

John, Dave and I started the AM with breakfast at the Doc Holiday Bar, the sight of his last gunfight several years before dying of tuberculosis. Dave stayed on in Pbville to rest his injured thigh planning to meet us in 2 days in Buena Vista while we went searching for trail. Seeking an alternative to the highway Cassi, John and I set out on the county roads west of Pbville. Thanks to my 15 year old Trails Illustrated map and numerous old RR grades we wandered a bit before catching Halfmoon Creek road and then the CT. It was worth the detour as this section of the CT was beautiful flowing single track that we road for miles and miles before finally descending south facing sage brush to Twin Lakes Reservoir. We lunched on the dock watching t-storms up in the Collegiates wondering how long our luck would hold. After a hot dusty route around the east end of the lake we regained north facing forest. A 1.5 mile spur trail took us to the 1890 resort of Interlaken. Many of the buildings were restored when they were moved uphill after the reservoir was expanded and the old road flooded. The interior of the main house was exquisite with 8 types of wood and a ship's lookout above the second floor to take in the lake and mts. More single track followed until we eventually stopped to make camp next to a creek in an aspen grove above Clear Creek Reservoir. There had been a lot of mining in the area with numerous old creek diversions, a huge metal flue and other equipment scattered on the hillsides around camp.
