Physical Education Content Standards:

A physically educated person:

Standard 1: Demonstrates competency in many movement forms and proficiency in a few movement forms.

Standard 2: Applies movement concepts and principles to the learning and development of motor skills.

Standard 3: Exhibits a physically active lifestyle.

Standard 4: Achieves and maintains a health-enhancing level of physical fitness.

Standard 5: Demonstrates responsible personal and social behavior in physical activity settings.

Standard 6: Demonstrates understanding and respect for differences among people in physical activity settings.

Standard 7: Understands that physical activity provides the opportunity for enjoyment, challenge, self-expression, and social interaction.

Units of Instruction:

Please refer to long range plans for your grade level for details. Regular monitoring and adjusting of the long range plans will occur in an attempt to improve student performance. Also on my PE website.

Instructional Materials and Resources:

Students will use a variety of sport and exercise equipment that will be different for each unit.

Major Assessments:

FitnessGram Testing is done twice a year for the 3rd, 4th and 5th grades, once in the fall and once in the spring. Students need to give their best effort on the tests. The test allows the student to see where they are located in the Healthy Fitness Zone for their age group. 5th graders will receive a FitnessGram report after all of the tests have been completed in the fall and in the spring that will show where they are in each category for fitness measured.

All first through fifth grade students will be assessed by the skill performance and participation in each class. They will have two standard based assessments per nine weeks. These are done at the end of the given unit to check understanding of the skill(s) that they have been doing previously.

Grading Scale:

The Lake Forest Elementary physical education grading scale follows district mandated policy. 80% of student’s grades are participation based %20 is based on standard based assessments. There are two formal assessments per 9 weeks.

K5 and First Grade Scale:

M = Meets Standards (see M description below)

P = Progressing toward Standards (see P description below)

Second-Fifth Grade Scale:

Q = Quality Achievement of Standards (90-100)

Demonstrates age appropriate skill development

Consistently shows good sportsmanship and self control

Consistently shows respect for others and teamwork

Consistently follows directions the first time given

Actively participates in all activities

M = Meets Standards (80 – 89)

Making satisfactory progress in skill development

Homework:

Students are strongly encouraged to work on skills that have been presented in class, and to be physically active for at least an hour each day outside of school

Attendance and Participation Policy:

Students attend physical education class weekly for forty-five minutes. During this time, they are expected to actively participate unless provided with a doctor's excuse. Students who do not regularly participate will have that reflecting on their grade.

Physical Education Specific Rules:

1. Respect yourself, the teacher, other students, and equipment

2. Stop, look, and listen when the whistle is blown.

3. Remember to wear and keep your tennis shoes on during class.

4. Listen and follow instructions the first time that they are given.

5. Stay in control of your body

6. No sliding on the gym floor.

Consequences for Breaking Physical Education Rules:

First Offense: Student receives warning.

Second Offense: Student receives three minute time-out.

Third Offense: Student sits out remainder of physical education class period. Minor incident report will be filed/ unless major incident

Major incident = Straight to assistant principal/principal

Procedures for Non-Instructional Routines:

Students need to wear tennis shoes on their assigned physical education class day. Students enter the P.E. room and sit in their assigned squad lines. Students will be given instructions for the day while in this formation. The majority of the class will be spent engaged in physical activities. The class will be brought back to their assigned squad lines to conclude class with a review of the day's activity.

Presentation of Rules and Procedures:

The rules, procedures, and expectations are posted inside the gym. They are presented on the first class day and reviewed on an as needed basis.

Physical Education Reward System:

Physical Education Activity of Choice Days, Class Prrowl paws, and individual prowl paws.

Communication with Parents:

Parents and guardians will be contacted through emails, telephone calls, and report cards. Parents and guardians may be contacted in regard to both positive and negative student behaviors.
