RTI Syllabus

Robert E. Cashion Elementary

2022-2023

Overview

RTI stands for Response to Intervention. We are a team of teachers dedicated to helping each student in our school learn to read. It is our hope that we will encourage each child that we serve to love reading for life.

Students meet with their RTI teacher for 30 minutes 4-5 times per week. Students receive instruction in phonics, comprehension, writing, and word work in small groups. We are careful to pull students during a time when they will not be missing core instruction.

How Students are Identified

Each fall, winter, and spring, all students in kindergarten through 5th grade will be screened using Fastbridge assessment(s). The assessments are short and fun for the children, and the RTI teachers enjoy getting the chance to talk to your child and to encourage them as a reader. We also look at a student’s F&P reading level and other available test scores as well as teacher recommendations.

Once all students have been assessed, we analyze the data collected to identify any students who would benefit from added instruction in reading. We assess students 3 times a year to track progress and to make sure that any student who has need in our school will be served.

Identified students are then placed in small groups based on their reading level. These small groups will meet with their RTI teacher 4-5 times a week for 30 minutes for differentiated instruction in reading.

Progress Monitoring

We track our students’ progress by assessing them every 2 weeks. Students who show enough growth during the year will “graduate” from the program. We will continue to monitor our “graduates” for a 6 week period of time to make sure that they are continuing to make progress in their regular classroom environment.

If a student is not making progress in the RTI program, an On-Track meeting will be organized to assess how to best meet the student’s needs. The team of people, including the parent(s) of the student, will discuss steps for helping the student become a successful reader.

How Parents Can Help their Children at Home

Parents need to read with their child each night. RTI students in grades 1-2 will bring home a book to practice reading. Please sit with your child while they practice their book at least once to help them if they get stuck. Encourage your child and help them if they get frustrated. Talk about the book together. RTI students in the upper grades can read on Epic, Freckle, or through apps from the public library. Again, encourage your child and help them if they get frustrated. Talk about the book together.

Parents of students in the younger grades will need to sign the log and return it in your child’s bag or folder the next day. Students can earn reading rewards for reading at home and getting their log signed. If your child loses or damages their book, please send in $5 with your child, so that we can replace the book for another child to use. Thank you!
