NCBM 0222 / MATD 0485 Developing Mathematical Thinking with Foundations
About the course
MATD 0485 is only offered as a course pairing with NCBM 0222. Students are required to sign up for both courses. This is a path for non-STEM students to complete their developmental math requirements in one semester. Only students who place into the NCBM 0222 course are allowed to take this course pairing. After successful completion of MATD 0485, students are TSI Complete but ONLY eligible for the following courses.
MATH 1332 Contemporary Math
MATH 1342 Elementary Statistics
Students who would place higher than NCBM 0222 are advised to take an Express Corequisite such as MATD 0385/MATH 1332 Contemporary Math Express or MATD 0342/MATH 1342 Statistics Express. Students placing near college-ready have the option to take these course pairings: Contemporary Math with Support: NCBM 0185/MATH 1332 or Elementary Statistics with Support: NCBM 0142/MATH 1342. Students should see an advisor for correct placement.
Our math department designed the Developing Mathematical Thinking with Foundations course pairing specifically to prepare students who come in below our entry level developmental courses for passing MATH 1332 Contemporary Mathematics and MATH 1342 Elementary Statistics. In this course pairing, we work on a broader group of mathematics skills than just algebra.
Meeting times
NCBM 0222 is scheduled to meet for 1 hour directly before each MATD 0485 class.
Students are required to register for both courses. Neither course can be taken as a standalone class.
This is a 6 hour paired course - 2 hours for NCBM 0222 and 4 hours for MATD 0485. Students are required to register and pay for both courses. The cost of an electronic textbook is included with the cost of tuition.
Who should take the course pairing
Students should see an ACC Advisor for placement and review Course Flow Charts for more information about course sequences. This course pairing prepares students for our Non-STEM first college-credit math courses, MATH 1332 Contemporary Mathematics and MATH 1342 Elementary Statistics.
This course pairing does NOT prepare students for math courses in the STEM sequence, such as MATH 1314 College Algebra, MATH 1414 College Algebra for Precalculus, and MATH 1324 Math for Business and Economics. Students needing to prepare for the STEM sequence should complete the NCBM 0270/MATD 0370 Elementary Algebra with Foundations course pairing as an alternative.
For more information about courses and prerequisites, see the Course Flow Charts
Course Expectations
Spend 12 to 18 hours every week on their math courses for the entire semester
Attend all class meetings and complete all assignments on time.
Struggle with some complicated ideas with classmates and on their own to make more meaningful connections and synthesize ideas.
Work with real-world scenarios and data, which means the numbers might get messy.
Work in groups and talk with other students about their ideas and listen carefully to ideas, so they can learn to think through all kinds of different math problems.
Spend a lot of time thinking more deeply about mathematical ideas.
Think through a problem and apply their knowledge to problems that they have never seen before.
