Our ‘Round Howard Street [Un]Class is a project-based class sponsored by the EX[L] Center at The University of Akron that aims to study jazz culture in connection with the city of Akron and bring about a fuller understanding and interpretation of Black history in Akron, Ohio. Individuals and groups in the [Un]class tackle different places on Howard Street to delve into them in detail.

Unfortunately, with our study into the past, we encounter some harmful or offensive material that does not reflect our viewpoints. However, we believe we should present important aspects of history. Overall, our goal is to highlight communities that have not been given the spotlight before, and receiving unfair treatment was a part of their experiences. We believe we can respectfully reveal the unfair treatment in a way that validates the difficult experiences that certain people in society experienced because of their religion, race, sexuality, and gender identity at the time
