SUPERVISOR
Dr. Mohammad Rihan is Director General of National Institute of Solar Energy and also the Professor of Electrical Engineering with experience of about 22 years with significant contributions in the areas of smart grid and Solar Energy; both areas under National missions. He Is also the Founder Director and Coordinator of the centre for Grid Integrated Green and Renewable Energy in the campus to address the research challenges presented by high penetration of renewable energy in the grid. He has also worked as Visiting Scientist at National Institute of Solar Energy (NISE), Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), Government of India for three years.
He has successfully guided 06 Ph.D. scholars in the areas of smart grid, solar energy, and synchrophasors measurement. He is guiding 06 PhD scholars at present as supervisor. Two of his present PhD scholars have been awarded the prestigious and highly competitive Prime Ministers’ Research Fellowship (PMRF).
Dr. Rihan has authored a textbook on ‘Green Energy and Sustainable Development’ to be published by Cambridge University Press (UK). He has authored a book on Green Energy Transition in India-Including the success story of AMU and another book on Advanced Control Systems also. He has contributed an invited chapter on Applications and Requirements of Smart Grid in a book published by Springer Nature.
He has led the integration of 6.5MWp solar PV plants in the AMU campus distribution grid; the largest such installation in any academic institution in the country. It includes a project of Rs. 20 Cr. for 3.3 MWp solar farm; a unique installation in any academic institute in the country. He has conducted training programs for senior engineers of electricity distribution companies, engineers and entrepreneurs under the MNRE-USAID PACE D initiative. He has established a Centre for Training on Solar PV in collaboration with Skill Council, Green Jobs, Government of India. He has also completed sponsored research projects of UPCST, MNRE and UGC.
He has conceptualized and started a Joint M.Tech program on Green Energy and Sustainable Development with the National Institute of Solar Energy. The program is in line with the national requirements for green energy transition and the National Education Policy. He has established a new Virtual Instrumentation and Smart Systems lab in the department.
He is a recipient of Gold Medal for securing first position in B.Tech. (Electrical Engineering). He is an elected Fellow of the IET(UK), IE(India), and IETE. He is Senior Member of IEEE and elected vice chair of executive committee of IEEE UP Section for 2021-2023. He is elected vice chair of executive committee of Delhi local network of IET(UK) for 2023.
Dr. Rihan is also heading the entire electricity setup; both conventional and renewable of the university since Dec 2015 as Member Incharge. The campus has a huge electricity network of 8.5MVA capacity. He acts as the technical, financial, and administrative head of the department and report to the vice chancellor.
Dr. Rihan is member secretary of Central Project Implementation and Monitoring Committee of the university which is responsible for allocation, evaluation and execution of consultancy work related to projects of national importance like smart City. He has provided technical consultancy to various projects of smart city, Agra, Aligarh and Bareilly and to the UP-Power Transmission Corporation Limited.

Dr. Sheeraz Kirmani is presently working as Associate Professor in Department of Electrical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering and Technology, Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh, India since December 2020. Earlier he had worked as Assistant Professor with the Department of Electrical Engineering, Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi and Department of Energy and Environment, TERI University, New Delhi, India. He has teaching, research and industry experience of 15 years. Presently he is taking subjects at undergraduate and post graduate levels in the area of Electrical Power Systems, Power Station Practice, HVDC and FACTS Devices, Renewable Energy, Power System Planning and Reliability, Power System Analysis, Restructuring and Deregulation of Power System, Switchgear and Protection etc.
Dr. Sheeraz Kirmani completed his B.Tech in Electrical Engineering from Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh in 2005, M.Tech in Energy Studies from Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, in 2007, Ph.D. from Jamia Millia Islamia (A Central University), New Delhi, India in 2014 in the area of Distributed Solar power generation.
Dr. Sheeraz Kirmani has published/presented more than 90 papers in various peer reviewed International conferences and Journals including IEEE, IET, Elsevier, Taylor and Francis, Scientific Research Publishing (USA) etc. He has also visited Open University, Milton Keynes, United Kingdon under UKIERI grant in June 2012. Varna, Bulgaria for presenting his paper in IEEE-PEMC 2016 and Ottawa Canada to attend the 2017 international conference on Power and Energy Systems in September 2017.
His current research interest includes distributed power generation, solar and wind resource assessment, smart grids, micro grids, grid integration of renewable energy sources, application of intelligent techniques to electrical power systems and Reactive Power Compensation.
Dr. Sheeraz Kirmani has already guided 04 Ph.D. students, 20 M.Tech thesis, 22 undergraduate projects and presently guiding 07 research scholars. He is also a life member of ICTP.
