Both Mrs. Thompson and I will be teaching our own students all subjects this year.
All fifth grade students will be responsible for adhering to our classroom rules. If each student follows the following four basic rules, everyone will be able to enhance his/her learning in a fun, positive, and challenging way.
Be Safe
Be Kind
Be Respectful
Be Responsible
Each student will be given a take-home binder at the beginning of the year. Each morning, students will record the assignments and/or lessons for the day. These binders will go home every night. These are meant to ensure all homework has been completed and any important information for parents has been sent home. Each day, I will sign my intials to indicate I have reviewed their planner. Parents are not required to sign the binders but it can be a great way for you to send information back to me. We expect fifth graders to take ownership of their responsibilities and planners can really help them stay organized. Feel free to make comments or leave notes for me in the binders but understand they are not always checked first thing in the morning. If you have a need to get information to me sooner, please call the school or email me.
It is my intention that we rarely ever have homework. In the event a student gets behind due to absences or other factors, I will provide ample time for them to get the work made up. I will communicate with you directly if a student is falling behind or has work that is late. You will get notes in their binder if they are missing work but if a student is falling substantially behind, you will get an email or call from me directly so we can work together on a plan to get the student caught up. In the event students do have homework, it will be clearly indicated in their take-home binder.
We will be going outside for recess every day unless Mr. Hoegh deems it unsafe to do so please make sure students are dressed appropriately for the elements. At times, our room may get cold or hot so it's a good practice for students to keep extra clothes in their locker. Students are also required to bring an extra T-shirt for Art class that they can wear over their clothes for the day. This T-shirt should be kept in their locker. In addition, students will be required to wear athletic shoes for P.E. days. It would be a good idea to keep an extra pair in their locker if possible.
Students will be permitted to bring water bottles into the classroom, provided they can be sealed to prevent spills. They will be encouraged throughout the day to refill their water bottles using the water fountains so they don't need to bring them home each day. I do recommend having the students take them home at the end of the week to be washed.
We will have classroom jobs that students will be assigned on a weekly basis. Jobs will rotate each week and every student will get multiple opportunities to perform each job throughout the year.
If a student is absent, please make sure you let the elementary secretary know. If a student is absent, or going to be absent, I will prepare a take-home folder and make arrangements to get the work home. If students are unable to do any work at home, I'll provide ample time to get the work made up upon the student's return to school.
Friday folders are a critical component of information sharing for each of our students. Critical information from the school as well as graded papers will be included in the folders. They will be sent home the last day of the school week. Parents should review all information in the folder, initial the folder indicating the information has been received, and send the folder back to school with the student on the first day of the following week. It's crucial I get these folders back as soon as possible.
In fifth grade, we will provide a variety of assessments to determine your child's needs and progress. NSCAS testing is our state-wide assessment in the areas in Reading, Math, and Science and will take place in the spring. Our curriculum is tailored to ensure Nebraska state standards are met. We will also do MAPs testing three times a year (Fall, Winter, Spring). Aside from standardized testing, students will be formally and informally assessed throughout the school year.NSCAS Testing will take place in the spring, which is our State-Wide Assessment in Reading, Math, and Scienc
We will celebrate each student's birthday (or half-birthday for summer birthdays). Students are welcome to bring treats for their birthday. I only ask that the treats are "nut-free" to account for potential allergies and enough treats are brought for everyone in class.AS Testing will take place in the spring, which is our State-Wide Assessment in Reading, Math, and Scienc
