Notice and Note Fiction

Throughout our classrooms, we have been learning about using signposts as we read. Signposts are clues that the author provides to help us know when to pay extra attention while reading. Using signposts helps students to more deeply comprehend what they read and gives them a place to begin discussing a story.

This list of signposts helps a student when reading a piece of fiction text. When students come upon a signpost, they should stop and ask themselves one of the following:

  • the anchor question listed with the signpost

  • Why is this important?

  • Why did the author choose to do this here?
