What is a Fab Lab?

"The Fab Lab is a Makerspace, or a Creative DIY space, where people can gather to create, invent, and learn. In libraries they often have 3D printers, software, electronics, craft and hardware supplies, tools, and more." (Kroski, OED, 2013)

Our MESMS Library Media Center (LMC) makerspace for students in grades 6-8 is a hub of activity! Our space, called the Fab Lab, features a variety of materials that students are using to tinker, create, and communicate plans as they build projects of their own designs.

  • Students will develop and build projects, document their process, evaluate progress, and reflect on results.
  • Students may take photos along the way, and upon completion, share their product with others in the library gallery.

The Yorktown Central School District and Foundation for Excellence has provided funding for our Fab Lab. With this funding we have purchased items such as LittleBits, Initial funding for our Fab Lab was secured through the Bea Griggs Memorial Incentive Grant, which recognizes innovation and exemplary programs which promote excellence in library services to children and young adults. This grant was provided by the School Library Media Specialists of Southeastern New York (SLMSSENY).
