Born: September 13, 1916, in Llandaff, Wales.
Tall Story: He was incredibly tall-- 6 feet 6 inches! His friends in the Royal Air Force nicknamed him "Lofty."
British Spy: During World War II, he was a fighter pilot and was even a spy for the British government.
Chocolate: When he was at school, the Cadbury chocolate company used to send boxes of new chocolate bars to the students to test. This later inspired him to write Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
The Writing Hut: He wrote all his children's books in a small shed at the bottom of his garden. He sat in an old armchair and wrote with HB pencils on yellow legal pads.
Inventor of Words: He created over 500 new words, like scrumdiddlyumptious, frazzlevanished, and snozzcumber. This language is often called "Gobblefunk."
