A 21st Century Resignification of the Never-ending Conquest

THE UNIVERSITY OF YORK, UK

8 NOVEMBER 2019.

UPDATE: NEW ABSTRACT SUBMISSION DEADLINE 27th SEPTEMBER

The conference “A Window onto Latin America: A 21st Century Resignification of the Never-ending Conquest” has extended the deadline for applications to the 27th of September 2019, in the University of York, England. We are calling all post-graduate students and early-career researchers working in topics related to the long-lasting consequences of colonialism and the current process of postcolonialism.

We are particularly interested – but not exclusively – in the transformation of Latin-American identities and the struggle to prevail in a westernized world, heavily influenced by European culture and cosmogony.

“A Window onto Latin America” is an interdisciplinary conference, that welcomes scholars from diverse disciplines within the Arts & Humanities. We would also like to invite scholars from Sciences and Social Sciences that would like to share how the epistemological differences affect their disciplines.

Applications should consist of Abstracts no longer than 250 words and a short bio, considering papers of no longer than 15 minutes. The original “Call for Papers” can be seen in this link, and a free registration can be done in this link.

2nd Conference A window onto Latin-America:

A 21st Century Resignification of the Never-ending Conquest

The conference will take place on 8th November 2019 in the Berrick Saul Building, the University of York.

The event will bring together scholars from Latin America and Europe. It aims to expose and discuss our contradictions as researchers from different epistemic paradigms and backgrounds, and to provide a forum for researchers in the UK who are studying the Latin American subcontinent. We propose the topic of a resignification of this never-ending conquest as a way of approaching the ongoing cultural hegemony and cultural struggles in the region, in conversation with a wide range of disciplines within the arts and humanities.

This project finds inspiration in the story of a Fuegian kidnapped by English explorers in the nineteenth century, brought to Britain to learn the ways of the English and rebaptized as ‘York Minster’, ‘Jemmy Button’ and ‘Fuegia Basket’. As South Americans studying and living in Europe, we find in this story a metaphor for our own contradictions.

The conference will feature a keynote speaker: Julie Cupples, from the University of Edinburgh, several panels covering a variety of disciplines within the humanities, and the performance of a piece composed by Carlos Zamora in homage to the memory of the Fuegian 'York Minster'.

This event is funded by the Humanities Research Centre, University of York, and organised by a multidisciplinary team of Latin American PhD students.
