Sisterhood in Action 2024
A Conference by and for the CWS Community
A Conference by and for the CWS Community
March 8th, 2024 | Treehouse, Berrick Saul Building, University of York
As many of you know, 2024 is a very special year for the Centre for Women’s Studies, as we are celebrating our 40th anniversary! Sisterhood in Action, though not as old as that, has been an annual tradition at CWS for many years. This internal conference is a chance to celebrate our community and to have a conference experience – for many, their first – in a low-stakes and welcoming environment.
This exciting event is a space for all CWS students (MA and PhD) to actively share their research ideas or projects and encourage each other through discussions, presentations, an exhibition and fun social activities. Our aim is for everyone to leave inspired and make space for various voices to be heard, supported and celebrated.
‘sisterhood in action’: The term ‘sisterhood’ as used here is intended to be symbolic, and designed to invoke feminist camaraderie and support, rather than focus on embodied womanhood.
After two years of online SiA Conference, we will be holding this year's event on campus once again. The tentative agenda will include an ice breaker, panels of 15 minutes for paper presentations, and 'table talks' (small discussion groups). There will also be a space to showcase artwork and an open mic at the end of the day.
All PhD students and MA Research students are invited to submit a 200-300-word abstract on any aspect of their work for a panel presentation (tips and guidelines for writing an abstract are available here).
The papers will be presented in 15 minutes, followed by questions and comments from the audience.
Deadline for abstracts: February 13th 2024.
Conference participants will break away into small groups for focused discussion. Further details to be confirmed.
Format: four or five students in each group, each offering a short introduction to a research-related issue, followed by a general focused discussion around broadly-related areas.
We will round off this event with an open platform for anyone to sing, perform, read their poetry, dance and do other exciting activities. Pick your favorite and let us know if you have any prepared work! There will be space for spontaneous contributions; aim for 3 minutes with 5 minutes maximum for each ‘turn’.
All CWS students are invited to submit artwork (craftwork, written work, pictures, posters, mottos, etc.), which we will present in the conference room and provide spaces for display and discussions.
All kinds of feminist-inspired work are welcome, both polished and provisional, so long as it can be fixed to a display board or placed on a table.
Please email cws.sisterhood@gmail.com with your ideas by the 13th of February so we can provide and allocate sufficient space.
