First Workshop March 2020

Academic-Industry Network Workshop

‘Audiences for Classical Concert and Performance Streaming’

Updated with Workshop Schedule 12 March 2020

Challenges and Opportunities in the Market for Classical Music and Opera Audiences

As part of the sociocultural changes related to digitalization, new musical reception practices are emerging in the field of classical music in many countries. New audio-visual online streaming services like the ‘Digital Concert Hall’ or ‘Philharmonie de Paris-Live’ promise to bring the ‘live’ experience of the classical concert or opera performances into the living-room and have achieved a noticeable number of users. At the same time, general attendance at classical music concerts is in decline. This raises the question whether audio-visual live-streaming will form an alternative/additional mode of classical music experience in the near future and how this will affect classical concert and opera culture, performance attendance, and everyday reception practices addressing recorded classical music and opera.

Our Academic-industry Network

To provide answers to these research questions, we have established an academic-industry collaboration network and plan to apply for research funding supporting our research (AHRC, etc.). We are currently a network consisting of the following partner organisations:

  • The York Music Psychology Group at the University of York, which is a word-leading research group for measuring and modelling audience experience and behaviour, represented through Dr. Hauke Egermann (Associate Professor and Director of YMPG)

  • The Audio Communication Group at the Technische Universität Berlin, who are one of the word-leading interdisciplinary research centres studying the technology, sociology, and psychology of the technical mediation of music (Prof. Dr. Stefan Weinzierl, Dr. Steffen Lepa)

  • Berlin Phil Media GmbH who produce the Digital Concert Hall, representing of the most successful streaming services for classical music (Christoph Franke, Creative Producer)

  • Opera Vision, the European opera streaming Platform (Luke O’Shaughnessy, Project Manager)

  • Yacine Ouazzani, PhD student Universitee de Lorraine, research project: opera streaming audiences

  • Opera North, national opera company based in Leeds, (Dominic Grey, Projects Director)

  • Irish National Opera (Sarah Halpin, Digital Communications Manager)

  • Silicon19/Polyphonic, Greg Browning, Producer

  • gdp, Gill Davies, producer

The following partners have expressed interest in the network but are not able to participate in our first workshop.

  • London Symphony Orchestra (Becky Lees, Head of LSO Live)

  • Southbank Centre/Philharmonia (Orchestra), (Bengi Unsal, Ben Larpent, Ruth Hardie)

  • Royal Opera House (Tony Followell)
