The Religion & Spirituality in Society & Culture (RASSC) Lab is an interdisciplinary research space dedicated to exploring the role of religion, spirituality, and secularity in society and culture, across spaces and scales - from local to global - as well as how these intersect.
We approach religion and spirituality as lived - and often contested - processes that are deeply interconnected with politics, culture, and values.
Our research uses creative methods to advance understanding and enrich public conversations on the place, significance and impact of religion, spirituality and secularity in the contemporary world.
Our expertise encompasses a range of areas, including: science and religion; nonreligion, atheism, and nonbelief; religion, secularism, and post/decoloniality; religion, gender, and sexuality; religion and spirituality in relation to climate and ecological breakdown; religion, migration, and asylum; religion, space and place; popular music and religion; spiritual and transcendent experiences; and spirituality and wellbeing. Our research spans different spaces and places, including the UK, France, Turkey, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Democratic Republic of Congo, and Nigeria, as well as transnational flows of religion and spirituality.
The RASSC Lab is based in the Department of Sociology at the University of York. If you'd like to follow the RASSC Lab and receive news from our team via email, you can subscribe to our newsletter.
