This war memorial was put up in 1922 to remember soldiers who died in the First World War. Around 10,000 soldiers from Leeds died during the war (1914-1918).

On 1 July 1916, 24 officers of the Leeds Pals Battalion took their men into No Man’s Land. At the end of the first day of the battle, only 17 of 900 men answered a roll call. 750 men had been killed.
