ECORISC CDT - SETAC 2026
Members of the ECORISC team travelled to the Netherlands in May to attend the SETAC Europe 36th Annual Meeting.
Many of our students presented posters and talks at the event including Dylan Asbury who was given the privilege of delivering the opening ceremony plenary, "Eating the Elephant and Empowering the Next Generation: Early-Career Perspectives on Environmental Science, Academia, and the Future," alongside four fellow researchers: Micha Wehrli (Eawag), Anna Shalin (University of Toronto), Bianca Stadelmann (University of Amsterdam), and Romain Figuière (Stockholm University).
Rather than a standard presentation, they delivered a dynamic, playful, and deeply honest performance, focused on navigating the systemic stresses of environmental research, the unique barriers early-career scientists face, and how to empower the next generation for a sustainable future.
The following day, they channeled that energy into chairing a special session, "Pull up a Chair: Connecting Science, Society, and the Next Generation." Joined by panelists Camille Étienne (social and climate activist), Rahel Marschall (GreenChem), and Hannes Reinwald (Bayer), they hosted a vital conversation on building two-way communication between science and the public, engaging youth, and supporting young professionals entering the field.
