As part of your master’s degree courses you have the opportunity to conduct independent research1 and write it up as a dissertation. The aims of the dissertation are to:
To pursue an independent research project in an area of research relevant to their studies
To apply the methodologies, skills and knowledge learnt from within the taught modules to a substantive piece of research work.
The learning outcomes are:
Critically examine the evidence base for health research and practice, using this analysis to formulate and refine research questions
Systematically plan and structure an independent research project.
Critically analyse research and review methodologies, selecting and applying approaches most relevant to the chosen topic.
Critically appraise, interpret and apply current evidence and literature.
Organise, structure and analyse/synthesise research findings, drawing conclusions that add to the existing knowledge base.
Communicate complex arguments and ideas in a succinct and scientific manner.
Critically evaluate the limitations of their own work and research methodology.
Work independently, with the support of supervisors, to complete a substantial piece of research
