Building Linguistic Systems

Department of Language and Linguistic Science, University of York

We are delighted to announce that the Building Linguistic Systems conference - originally scheduled for July 2020 - will now be taking place in York on June 14th-16th 2022. The programme is now available to view here and registration is now open.

Given that this will be a small-scale event with lots of opportunity for networking, we have decided not to offer remote attendance as an option.

For the sake of the safety of all participants, the conference will be open only to those already vaccinated.

We hope you will be able to join us in York for a conference to mark the retirement of Professor Marilyn Vihman in Summer 2020. Professor Vihman’s work on the relationship between perception and production has changed our understanding of how children build early phonological representations, and her publications on phonological, lexical and morphological development have become essential reading for child language scholars around the world.

Themes of the conference will include:

  • Early phonological, lexical or morphological development

  • Interaction between production and perception

  • Emergent systematicity

Our programme is available here.

We are pleased to welcome Janet Pierrehumbert (University of Oxford) as our plenary speaker.
