Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving Day is a national holiday celebrated in Canada and the United States. Americans celebrate Thanksgiving on the fourth Thursday of November while Canadians celebrate on the second Monday of October.

It began as a day of giving thanks for the blessing of the harvest and of the preceding year. Similarly named festival holidays occur in Germany and Japan.

the History

In 1620, many Englishmen sailed to America on ships. One of those ships was called the Mayflower. These Englishmen were called Pilgrims.

During the winter, they had a hard time. They did not have enough food or clothes. Many of them got sick and died.

Native Americans showed the Pilgrims how to plant corn and pumpkins in spring. They also showed them how to hunt for turkeys. The Pilgrims were very happy because they had enough food for the winter. They were thankful for the natives so they invited them over and celebrated with a feast.
