I’ve always been interested in the phenomena of repression and dissociation. As the eldest child in a conservative asian family, I’ve always been expected to work hard and put academics first before my other needs and interests. Moreover, growing up in the ever evolving and devolving landscape of my country also made me acutely aware of the interconnectedness between our environment and the way in which we deal with our emotions. These ideas are presented in my portfolio, where I sought to explore various ways to represent them in my art.
The unraveling of these concepts occurs through the mediums and designs that I utilize. Glass, both shattered and broken, and prim and pristine are present throughout various pieces and showcases the fragility of the inner workings of our mind. Plaster, exhibiting human body language and emotions are strewn throughout as a window into our subconscious with wood serving as a grounding medium. Designwise, through the use of both geometric and natural forms, the pieces either juxtapose and contrast the opposite states of reality and delusion or blurs them into a single tangled form, murkin the waters through which our psyche wades through life.
