Counseling Mission Statement
The mission of the Del Valle Middle School Comprehensive Counseling Program is to support the growth of all students by providing a proactive, developmentally appropriate approach to obtaining the academic, career, and social-emotional skills necessary to succeed in higher education. Through advocacy and collaboration with administrators, families, and community members, we seek to identify and remove potential barriers to success, while preparing our students in a safe, caring environment for life-long learning and successful citizenship. As part of the Del Valle Community, we also support students in their educational goals through innovation, engagement, and positivity. We are One Family, One Destiny!
Counseling Vision Statement
The Del Valle Middle School Comprehensive Counseling Program ensures that ALL students will have equitable access to the acquisition of the academic, career, and social-emotional skills required to achieve success in higher education, be fluent in two or more languages, and become successful and productive citizens in their community. All students who enroll in our schools will graduate from high school, fluent in two or more languages, prepared and inspired to continue their education in a four-year college, university, or institution of higher education so that they become successful citizens in their community.
What is SEL?
SEL is the process through which all young people and adults acquire and apply the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to develop healthy identities, manage emotions and achieve personal and collective goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain supportive relationships, and make responsible and caring decisions.
What does SEL look like in School?
• Practicing social and emotional skills, like reflection and collaboration, during academic lessons. For example, working in groups to discuss different perspectives on how to approach a math problem.
• Opportunities for students to build supportive relationships with peers and adults, such as a “morning meeting” or a quick check-in.
• Learning about and practicing social and emotional skills with age-relevant instruction, such as lessons on being a good friend or coping with stress.
• Adults modeling social and emotional skills and proactively looking for ways to support students.
• Families, educators, and students working together to plan and discuss strategies for promoting success.
