Tennis is one of the few sports where the competition is year-round. In the Fall we compete as a team, playing both singles and doubles against another school. We have a tennis ladder, where you compete against your teammates to see who is the best and in what order you rank against one another. We then go out on all day tournaments on Fridays and Saturdays eating as a team and spending quality time with one other on the bus. For district play we compete after school on Tuesdays and Fridays. In our district the top two teams move on to the next level, compete as a team against other schools.
In the Spring we play as individuals, in either a singles division, doubles, or mixed. After meeting all of the teams in our district, playing on Tuesdays and Fridays, we compete in the district tournament where the top two in each division move on to the Regional level.
Daily practices consist of a dynamic warm up, a hitting warm up, match play, and skill development, tennis focused workouts, a game and any necessary stretching. Any bad weather days are spent in the classroom to use as film study or to review matches.
My name is Coach Sanchez and it is my second semester as the Bel Air tennis coach. I played high school tennis as the number one player from my Freshman year to my Senior year at Montwood high school. I then received a scholarship to play college tennis at the University of the Permian Basin. During college I was a tennis instructor at the Bush Tennis Center in Midland for three years. My first two years after college were as the assistant tennis coach at Odessa Permian. After that, my third and fourth years of coaching was as the head tennis coach at Tornillo high school. After serving as the assistant coach at Ysleta, I found my way to Bel Air!
