The depth of the lake is 1,632m. It also contains the world's largest volume of fresh water, 23,000 cubic kilometers . Nearly 1/5 of the fresh water we use comes from Lake Baikal. Lake Baikal is also the most ancient freshwater source. Lake Baikal is also a natural habitat for one of the world's most unique creatures. Lake Baikal is naturally pure so we didn't have to use the process of desalination. Lake Baikal was out of the Russian people's sight until the Russian government built the Trans-Siberian railway.
