Assistant Teacher

Under the direction of the Lead Teacher, the incumbent assists the teacher in implementing all classroom routines and activities.

Essential Functions:

  • Working cooperatively as an effective team member and carry out the daily operations of the program.
  • Following the objectives and goals of the room.
  • Developing a cooperative and supportive attitude in the room.
  • Helping to maintain a clean and orderly classroom.
  • Participating in all available sessions, staff meetings, parent conferences and external training sessions.
  • Working directly with children in assisting, organizing, and supervising children’s personal belongings, and classroom materials.
  • Participating in establishing routines in your designated room.
  • Assisting in maintaining quality health, safety, and care of children..
  • Assisting the teacher in planning and implementing activities on a daily basis.
  • Maintaining good communication with parents, under the supervision of the Lead Teacher.
  • Participating in the children’s evaluations.
  • Assuming the responsibilities of the Lead Teacher in his/her absence.
  • Participating in staff training sessions and take advantage of external training opportunities to improve child development skills (YEP requires at least 20 hours of training per year).
  • Assisting the other staff as assigned and assume other related duties to ensure the smooth operation of the center.
  • Having the ability to follow instructions and implement tasks.
  • Being responsible for being familiar with safe workplace guidelines of their job duties and to adhere to these guidelines.
  • Being responsible for awareness of safe lifting and bending procedures.
  • Being responsible for reading all labels, while following specific directions in the handling of various hazardous materials (e.g. paint, glue, soap products, pool products, solvents, etc.).
  • Being open to new ideas and principles of the NA.E.Y.C. code of ethical conduct.

Physical Demands:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

Required Credentials:

The ideal candidate must have at least a High School Diploma/GED, or an equivalent credential, or an active/obtained C.D.A. 2+ years of credible & relative E.C.E. experience is also required. The ideal candidate must be able to multitask in a fast paced environment whenever possible, while displaying exceptional skills in communication and writing. The ideal candidate must also be able to follow and implement directions at all times.

Additional Requirements:

The ideal candidate must be voluntarily willing to take and pass a fully extensive criminal background check, which includes FBI, Criminal, & Child Abuse Clearances.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:

This is a full-time position, and hours of work and days are generally 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday Through Friday; extended hours may be necessary as needed to cover staffing during center hours.
