Department was started on 1st January 2017. We were the first medical college to start department of geriatric medicine in the region.
VISION:
To develop Yenepoya Geriatric Medicine department as a centre of National excellence in the field of geriatrics and gerontology.
MISSION:
To provide the highest standard of comprehensive, compassionate and ethical diagnostic, therapeutic and preventive clinical and community services to the elderly population on an affordable and easily accessible manner.
To develop into a teaching centre of eminence in the field of geriatrics & gerontology.
GOALS:
To provide geriatric health care of highest quality at the hospital, home & community level in an elder-friendly environment.
To provide acute & long term care of elderly, especially for conditions grouped under ‘modern geriatric giants’.
To develop into a centre of repute imparting effective training to the medical graduates in the field of geriatrics & gerontology.
OBJECTIVES:
Clinical/Community:
To provide Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment of all elderly attending clinics.
To provide Speciality clinics liaising with allied specialties to extend the scope of services to attend the ‘modern geriatric giants’.
To adopt Preventive strategies by training the elderly, their care givers and community volunteers in active ageing programs, daily physical exercises, yoga sessions.
To provide Home care by a multidisciplinary team of doctors & ancillary personnel.
To conduct Awareness camps by celebrating world elder abuse awareness day (June 15th), world senior citizen day (Aug 21st), world Alzheimer day (Sept 21st) and month, & international day of the older persons (Oct 1st).
To implement National policies for the benefit of elderly & prevention of elder abuse.
To help reduce the caregiver burden by effective training of caregivers, community workers – especially in conditions like Dementia.
To provide good Telemedicine consultation for elderly who can not make frequent clinic visits.
Academic Services:
To train the Indian Medical Graduate (IMG) to the needs of the growing Indian elders population with the aim of teaching the 22 core competencies pertaining to the field of geriatrics, mentioned in the MCI CBME document (2018), by faculty from Geriatric department.
To train the IMG in Palliative care basics with emphasis on geriatrics.
To start MD Geriatric Medicine course.
We provide following services to the senior citizens of the region and those being referred to us.
Outpatient Services: Daily OPD, Speciality Clinics (Memory, Falls, Frailty & Fracture risk assessment, Incontinence, Vaccination).
Community & Home care Services:
Started by both Nursing college and Medical colleges in association with Community medicine department.
Networking with all NGO’s caring for the elderly.
MOU - with Susheg Trust for Neuro-palliative care, with regular doctor’s visits & Olavinahalli rehab center, Kinya & Sri Sai Seva Pratistanam, Daigoli - for geriatric services.
Memory testing - for all the senior citizens during the month of September in association with PAGE (Peoples Association for Geriatric Empowerment).
Home care services:
Within a radius of 30 KM - functional from March, 2020.
Home care visits, Palliative care services, COVID-time geriatric services.
Home lab sample collection, home delivery of drugs, home nursing care, physiotherapy and doctor visits.
Renting of oxygen cylinders, nebulisers, Fowlers cot, suction apparatuses and air bed - started from April, 2020.
Telemedicine consultation:
where the elder’s needs are addressed by the faculty.

'Active ageing' Whatsapp group:
Apart from an hour-long daily flexibility training exercises, we engage the elders in fun exercises including crossword puzzle solving, Memory Assessment and Cognitive stimulation activities on line, singing, online simple dancing, making craft, newspaper reading, solving proverbs, giving message of the day by taking turns, sharing health related messages etc. In COVID times, messages relating to desease awareness, preventive measures and vaccination programme are shared in the group.

MBBS UG teaching
22 core competencies pertaining to geriatrics in the MCI (2018) CBME syllabus are taught by the faculty of Geriatric Medicine.
Effective use of University’s Learning Management System (LMS) ‘Yengage’.
COVID period (since March, 2020): active participation in online teaching is going on.

Teaching of MD General Medicine Postgraduates
Subject seminars, journal clubs of interest in geriatrics are moderated by our faculty.
Rotational posting in department of geriatrics.
Faculty take active part in teaching, including bedside clinical teaching sessions.
Teaching learning & Content enrichment:
Involved in UG curricular innovation in assn. with an All India group of faculty of academic excellence.
3 Faculty are part of GERG (Geriatric Education & Research Group) formed with 28 eminent faculty in the field of geriatrics.
Developing the 22 core competencies pertaining to the field of geriatric medicine – outlined in the MCI document ‘CBME UG Curriculum for the IMG, 2018'.
Free certificate course - Teaching is imparted in a modular format, over 2 months (1st course was conducted in August- September, 2020).
YMC Geriatric Services was recognised by the Govt of Karnataka by a State award of Rs.1 lakh and a Plaque, from the Chief Minister on ‘World Elder’s Day Celebrations’ on 01-10-2018.
June 2018 – May 2019:
Visiting “Susheg Trust” residential care facility for Neuropalliative care regularly.
14 module cognitive simulation activities have been started for 22 people as a weekly activity under the direction of Dr Prabha Adhikari at Chethana premises every Saturday in association with Spoorthi Trust from 22-05-2019.
June 2019 – May 2020:
Visiting “Susheg Trust” residential care facility for Neuropalliative care regularly.
Continuing modules 2-6 of Cognitive stimulation activity for 24 elders who were screened for cognition under Anantha Sowkya project of Seva Bharathi Trust on 06-06-2019, 13-06-2019, 20-06-2019, 27-06-2019.
Participated in Yoga Marathon organized by Yenepoya University on 22-06-2019.
Awareness Memory walk: launch of World Alzheimer’s month on 31-08-2019, 08-10 AM.
Online free Telemedicine consultation – 64 Patients
June 2020 - May 2021:
Online exercise programme for elderly through Google meet daily from 04-07-2020.
Online Yoga training: A month long programme from 03-08-2020 to 03-09-2020 (daily one hour training).

Started Geriatric Home care packages - renting out Fowler’s cots, Alpha beds, Home oxygen, Nebulisers, Suction apparatuses - from the beginning COVID lockdown period (April 2020). Home COVID sample collection for Rapid antigen and RT- PCR tests has also been started at a cost of Rs.5000/.
