TPA Information
California Teaching Performance Assessment (CalTPA) is a state-mandated, summative assessment completed by Multiple and Single Subject candidates. Successful completion of an approved TPA is required by the state to earn a preliminary credential (Education Code Section 44320.2). A CalTPA is also being piloted for Education Specialist candidates.
CalTPA is split up into two cycles, which can be submitted separately. Both must be passed.
Cal TPA Passing Standards
At its June 2019 Meeting, the Commission approved the following passing standards for the redeveloped CalTPA:
Cycle 1 (8 rubrics): A final cut score of 19 points with one score of 1 allowed
Cycle 2 (9 rubrics): A final cut score of 21 with one score of 1 allowed
These passing standards will apply to all CalTPA cycles submitted on or after August 23, 2019.
Candidates who do not meet the passing standard on one or both cycles may seek remedial support from their preparation programs and have the opportunity to retake the appropriate cycle(s) in accordance with the CalTPA Retake Policy . See PSA 19-06 for more information.
