What do I Need to Know?

  • Gun Violence: violence committed with the use of firearms (such as pistols, shotguns, assault rifles or machine guns)

  • Gun Violence Survivor: a person who has survived violence with the use of firearms

  • Pew Research Center Data reported 44% of Americans said they know someone who has been shot and 23% of Americans said that a gun has been used to threaten or intimidate a family member or themselves

  • ABC News/Washington Post poll (September 2019) reported 6 in 10 Americans fear that a mass shooting will occur in their community

  • USA Today/Ipsos poll (March 2018) reported 53% of young people ages 13 through 17 identified gun violence as a “major worry” (this outranked all other concerns on the poll)

  • American Psychological Association surveys (August 2019) found that almost 80% of adults said they experience stress because of the possibility of a mass shooting, 1/3 of adults said fear of a mass shooting prevents them from going to certain places or events, and 1/4 of adults said they changed how they live their lives because of fear of a mass shooting

  • The National Center for PTSD estimates that 28% of people who have witnessed a mass shooting develop post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and about 1/3 develop acute stress disorder
