Explore the adventure of ancient Greece and Rome! This course will allow you to discover the relationship between mythology and its influence on today’s society. You will delve into distinguished myths such as Pandora and Hercules and uncover the teachings and lessons that are revealed. Furthermore, you will unravel the interesting roles of mythological figures like Zeus, Poseidon, and Aphrodite and uncover the challenges posed by the lesser gods of the underworld. You will read and dissect a series of short passages from the ancient world and analyze the great epics from Greece, which include Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey. These of course are arguably the very first works of literature in Western tradition that has remained a central component of modern culture. Students will explore the dynamic story of the Bronze Age conflict between the kingdoms of Troy and Mycenaean Greece. Furthermore, you will focus on the history of ‘ancient Olympics’, the violence of Roman sport and spectacle including gladiatorial combat and chariot races and conceptions of gender and sport. This fascinating course will allow you to develop a solid understanding of the literature, archaeology, and art connected with the Greece and Rome, and become comfortable with a wide variety of secondary literature and scholarly approaches to the study of the captivating legacies of our past!
This course allows students to explore the beliefs and achievements of the classical world, which have shaped Western thought and civilization. Students will investigate such aspects of classical culture as its mythology, art, literature, and philosophy, as well as elements of ancient Greek and Latin, through a variety of activities such as dramatizations, audio-visual presentations, and discussions. By reading classical authors in English and examining archaeological evidence, students will enhance both their communication skills and their ability to think critically and creatively.
