Below you will find a brief description of the ESL courses offered at Sacred Heart and some of the important information regarding each course.

ESL AO/BO

• Focus on a variety of reading strategies

• Short writing tasks

  • such as paragraph writing and sentence structure

• Grammar, spelling and word study

• Real life scenarios

ESL CO

• Short novels such as “Everyday Hero”, “The Breadwinner”, or “Bridge to Terabithia”

• Longer writing tasks, extended paragraphs such as descriptive, narrative, or recount paragraphs

• More independent reading opportunities

ESL DO

• Class novel study: Hatchet by Gary Paulsen

  • Literature circle opportunities for class discussion

  • Analysis with reference to elements of fiction

  • Literary Essays

• Small group novel study:

  • Collections of small writing tasks to demonstrate reading comprehension as well as writing skills

• Consistent Oral presentations to become comfortable with speaking in front of peers.

• Exposure to William Shakespeare - Macbeth

  • Oral communication tasks: Role Play and read aloud to demonstrate speaking skills

• Avenues 3 Grammar

ESL EO

• Class novel study to understand personal narratives - Dear Canada: These Are My Words: The Residential School Diary of Violet Pesheens

  • Collection of written journal entries to practice writing skills

• Class novel study - Animal Farm

  • Literary Essay

• Exposure to William Shakespeare - Hamlet

  • Oral communication tasks: Role Play and read aloud to demonstrate speaking skills

• Reading, Writing, Oral communication focus to prepare for Academic English stream
